The Carl Schmidt Sohn brand since 1829
A brand that started its business making swords.

Located on the Wupper River, 30 km northeast of Cologne, the city of Solingen was founded in 1374. Now renowned for its blade-making credentials, this city of 120,000 people has been home to the Carl Schmidt Sohn brand since 1829.

The presence of iron ore near the city of Cologne (Germany's richest commercial center) meant that Solingen quickly became a center for metalworking. Fine quality sword blades were made here in the 14th century, and Solingen was contracted to sell all its swords and weapons to Cologne where the hilts were attached and the finished weapons sold. From the late 14th and early 15th centuries, blacksmith foundries were found around the city of Solingen, adding to Solingen's fame as a blacksmithing center of Northern Europe. Swords from Solingen appeared in places such as the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the British Isles. Northern Europe appreciated the quality of the weaponry made by Solingen, and it was traded throughout the European continent. Napoleon, who briefly ruled Solingen until his abdication in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo, abolished the monopolies of the trade guilds. Solingen's sword and cutlery industry grew rapidly, although Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France blocked it. Carl Schmidt Sohn began producing sabers in 1829. By 1830, production was up to 2,000 swords per week and had over 100 blacksmiths, grinders and workers. As Germany was quickly becoming a hotbed for the production of industrial tools, Carl Schmidt Sohn also began producing knives, cutlery, razor blades, scissors and pocket knives from 1869. As the demand for knives from abroad increased, Carl Schmidt Sohn began to increase the production of knives. and fewer scissors and razors. Since the beginning of the century, most Carl Schmidt Sohn knives have been exported throughout Europe.

Since then Carl Schmidt Sohn has been known for their excellence in the manufacture of high-quality knives and cutlery based on a long-term production history in the city of Solingen. Today, Solingen remains the center of knives in Germany, where approximately 90% of German knives are produced.

Already in 1928, the famous knife product lines such as „Continental”, „Solingia” or „La Casita” were sold throughout Europe with great success.1829 has been dedicated to the development and production of knives for more than 180 years and has continuously improved the combination of form and function.
